About the event
Surbahar: Timeless Echoes of Dhrupad
Innishari invites you to an evening brimming with the mesmerizing strums of Surbahar performed by Korean musician, Wonseok (वोन सोग).
Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of Hindustani classical music, known for its meditative quality, slow tempo, and emphasis on vocal improvisation. This creates a deeply immersive and introspective listening experience.
Despite being rare, the Surbahar remains an important part of the instrumental tradition of gharanas of dhrupad and Dhrupad-inspired music such as the Seniyas and the Dagars, and the Imdad Khan/Etawa gharana of the sitar. Amongst the lute family instruments, it remains unmatched for its acoustic richness and melodic potential.
About Wonseok:
Indian classical music captivated Wonseok (वोन सोग) after graduating from music college in Japan in 2011. Under the mentorship of his Sitar teacher, Mr. Teiju Kato, who introduced him to the Mani Kaul film,"Dhrupad", Wonseok found his calling in learning the Dhrupad. Since 2015, he has taken guidance under Pt. Manilal Nag, and Vidushi Mita Nag. In 2017, he was recommended to learn the Surbahar and was introduced to Pt. Pushpraj Koshti, an eminent exponent of the Surbahar and Sitar in the Dagar Dhrupad tradition. Pt. Pushpraj Koshti has been guiding Wonseok in instrumental music in Dhrupad style for the last 7 years.
Wonseok aspires to share the beauty and depth of Indian classical music with audiences in India and his native homeland, South Korea.
